The Importance of Self-Love: Why It Matters & Body Neutrality

Self-love is a powerful concept that is often misunderstood or dismissed as being selfish or narcissistic, but that’s not the case! Self-love is an essential aspect of mental health and well-being, and it is critical to developing a healthy sense of self-esteem, self-worth, and confidence. Self-love is the practice of treating yourself with kindness, compassion, and respect. It involves recognizing and embracing your strengths and weaknesses and acknowledging your own worth as an individual. Without self-love, we may struggle to feel content with ourselves, leading to feelings of anxiety, depression, and self-doubt. It’s a slippery slope, my friends.

What Does it Mean to Love Yourself?

Self-love requires continual work and commitment to yourself. It's an ongoing practice that requires a conscious effort to prioritize our own needs and values. It’s treating ourselves with kindness, compassion, and respect, even when it’s hard. Self-love also means setting healthy boundaries, and recognizing and embracing our strengths and weaknesses.

Cultivating Self-Love: Where to Begin

Cultivating self-love can be a challenging task, especially if you have struggled with low self-esteem or self-doubt in the past - who hasn’t. However, there are a few steps you can take to build a stronger sense of self-love, including:

  1. Practice self-care: No part of self-care has to be elaborate. In fact, some of the best self-care activities are simple, accessible, everyday practices. Think breathing deep, taking a warm bath, going for a walk, or practicing mindfulness meditation. Framing self-care as small, manageable acts of self-kindness can help you feel more connected to your body and your needs.
  2. Challenge negative self-talk: Pay attention to your inner voice and challenge any negative thoughts or beliefs that may be holding you back. Instead, focus on positive affirmations and self-compassion. Here’s a simple one for you: I am enough, just as I am. Think it, say it, believe it.
  3. Surround yourself with positivity: Sure we’re all individual people, but humans have always been, and probably always will be, social creatures. Because of these shared emotional bonds, we can’t help but be influenced by those that we share our lives with. Consistently spending time with people who support and encourage you lifts you up. Consistently critical and ungrateful people may bring you down, so keep tabs of the company that you keep. This includes online communities and social media!

Body Neutrality: What It Is and Why It Matters

Body neutrality is a relatively new concept that is gaining popularity in the wellness community. It is the idea that we can learn to accept our bodies without necessarily having to love or even like them. This approach recognizes that the body is simply a vessel for our experiences and that its appearance does not define our value.

Shifting our perspectives away from external validation and toward what your body can do is empowering. It helps develop a sense of appreciation for your old bag of bones, reducing pressure to conform to whatever current and unattainable beauty standard the algorithm is populating that week.

Body neutrality and self-love are closely related concepts.

Body neutrality can be an important component of self-love because it allows you to focus on your health and well-being rather than solely on your appearance. It can help you to let go of harmful and restrictive beauty standards and to accept your body as it is, with all its imperfections and flaws. This acceptance can lead to a greater sense of self-love and self-compassion, as you learn to treat yourself with kindness and respect, regardless of how your body looks.

Fostering a Supportive and Inclusive Community in the Bathhouse

Bathhouses are increasingly popular as a places for community wellness. However, these spaces can also be intimidating for some people, particularly those who do not feel comfortable in their bodies or who come from marginalized communities. To foster a supportive and inclusive community in the bathhouse, we can take several steps:

  1. Create a welcoming atmosphere and inclusive environment for everyone. This includes offering gender-neutral changing rooms, accessibility features, and providing information about the benefits of sauna for all body types and abilities.
  2. Educate staff and guests. Staff and guests should be educated about the importance of body neutrality and inclusivity. This can include education on body neutrality, size diversity, and cultural competency.
  3. Prioritize diversity and inclusion. Actively seek out ways to include and uplift marginalized communities, such as offering discounted rates for low-income individuals or partnering with local organizations to provide free sauna access for underrepresented groups.
  4. Encourage open communication: Encourage open and honest communication between staff and guests, and provide a space for feedback.
